Do You Need to Know Design Terms to Hire a Brand Designer? (Spoiler: Nope)

Six years ago, a client asked me a question so small I almost didn’t think twice about it.

She’d been pouring her heart into her business for a while, and she was finally ready to invest in her brand. We were just getting started when she got real quiet and asked:

“Is it okay that I don’t know any design words or terms?”

That question stuck with me. Honestly, it changed the whole direction of my business. If you’ve ever felt that same nervous feeling before reaching out to a designer, this one’s for you.

“Am I a big enough business to hire a designer? Do I belong here? Am I allowed to want this?”

Before I started Hatched Design Co, I spent years doing corporate design for big-name brands like Kate Spade, Incipio, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Walmart and Target. Big employers, big projects, great résumé lines. But something about it never felt fulfilling, and I couldn’t put my finger on why.

Then I got laid off.

Not my favorite chapter, but it’s the one that led me to where I am now. I started working alongside women entrepreneurs, the solopreneurs building something from scratch with nothing but hustle and heart. And that’s when I heard that question.

“Is it okay that I don’t know any design words or terms?”

So many talented women feel that way. You’re great at what you do. Your clients love you. But the second you think about hiring a designer, you start worrying you’ll sound silly, ask the “wrong” questions, or not know how to explain what you want.

Here’s the truth: that’s not your job. It’s mine.

Bring your random 2 AM voice memos to the table.

You don’t need to know what kerning is. You don’t need to be able to explain the difference between a primary logo and a submark. You don’t even need a clear vision yet.

All you need is your story (and your messy notes):

  • Your story. Why you started, who you love working with, and what makes you different.
  • Your gut feelings. “I love this, I hate that, this just feels like me.” That’s plenty to work with.
  • Your messy notes. Pinterest boards, screenshots, 2 AM voice memos. Bring ’em all.

My job is to listen, ask a whole lot of questions, and translate all of that into a brand that actually looks and feels like you. No design dictionary required!

That one little question is basically the whole reason Hatched exists.

It’s why I built a brand and website design studio where women feel seen, understood, supported, and proud of how they show up.

And it taught me something that carries over into every brand I design: the small things make all the difference.

Your brand works the same way. It’s rarely one big dramatic overhaul that changes everything. It’s the little details:

  • A website that sounds like how you actually talk
  • Colors and fonts that feel like you, not a trend
  • A welcome email that makes a new client exhale

Those small moments are what make people trust you, remember you, and come back.

Ready to stop worrying about the “right” words?

If you’ve been putting off your brand because you’re not sure how to explain what you want, consider this your permission slip. You bring the vision (and the messy notes). I’ll bring the rest.

Book a FREE call with me and let’s chat about what your brand needs. No design words required.😉

This call is where we get real about what’s working, what’s not, and what you actually need to move forward. I’ll ask about your business, your people, and what’s keeping you up at night—then I’ll tell you straight up if we’re a good fit.

No pressure, no sales-y stuff, just two people figuring out if we should work together. By the end, you’ll know your next step—whether that’s with me or not.
